Dr. Deshunna Monay Ricks, Ed.D. | Transforming Education in West Fresno
A community leader and educator advancing equity through intentional engagement, family empowerment, and transformative educational strategies.

Dr. Deshunna Monay Ricks, Ed.D., is an educator, social work professional, author, and community leader whose work is deeply rooted in serving West Fresno and Fresno Unified School District Area 1. With more than 15 years of experience supporting children and families, she is committed to advancing educational equity, strengthening culturally responsive systems, and promoting holistic well-being that supports academic, social, and emotional success.
Throughout her career, Dr. Ricks has focused on addressing the unique needs and strengths of historically underserved communities. She most served as Program Manager of the African American Academic Acceleration Program in FUSD, where she led strategic efforts to expand opportunity, close achievement gaps, and improve outcomes for students. A central part of her work has been partnering with parents, providing guidance on trauma-informed practices, and empowering families to advocate for their children and actively engage in their educational journeys. She also served as a counselor providing social emotional support to students in West Fresno.
She is also the founder of I AM Valuable, a nonprofit organization dedicated to uplifting children and families in through a holistic approach to wellness that nurtures the mind, body, and spirit. Through mentorship, parent engagement, education, and community partnerships, her work builds resilience, strengthens families, and creates pathways for opportunity.
Through her leadership, service, and advocacy, Dr. Ricks remains dedicated to strengthening West Fresno and ensuring that students and families in Area 1 have the support, resources, and voice they deserve.
In addition, Dr. Ricks teaches social work and counseling in higher education and is a published children’s book author. Through her leadership, service, and advocacy, she remains dedicated to strengthening Area 1 and creating pathways for lasting community transformation. .
